Another Duxbury native, Don Merry grew up playing in the water alongside Skip and as he puts it, “always wanted to make a living from the sea.” He eventually opened Duxbury’s Back River Fish Market which he ran for about 10 years before Skip approached him about growing oysters. Seeing an opportunity he couldn’t pass up (one that involved more time on the water) he sold the market and committed his life to growing oysters.
From the beginning, Don has been instrumental in developing the Island Creek brand and putting our oysters in front of new business. He’s even gone so far as to approach a restaurant owner at a bathroom urinal, drape an Island Creek sweatshirt over the man’s shoulders, and walk away. Needless to say, we got the business.
Don’s been teaching his son Ben how to hunt and fish and continues to collect both eel spears and various oyster shells of odd shapes and sizes.
Off the water:
Hunting; fishing; jet setting; fine dining. He’s also a huge English Premier League soccer fan.
